This week’s artist… Sofia, Turin, Italy.
Sofia is a gifted painter in her final year of graduate studies at the Academy of Fine Arts of Turin. Through her art, Sofia conveys her feelings on the transition into adulthood and contemporary events. Italy was one of the early pandemic hotspots, and its government responded with a national quarantine in March. “The pandemic made me feel like a prisoner from March to mid-May. I had the feeling of living in a nightmare because the news on television was terrifying.” But being locked-in pushed her to paint much more than usual, and she added six new paintings to her ongoing pools series. Sofia’s paintings are surreal, figurative oil paintings that include elements of her daily life (she is a surf lifesaving athlete and mountaineer). Not surprisingly, her favorite artist is the surrealist painter, Rene Magritte. Sofia is an avid consumer of novels and essays (in total, 80-90 novels a year). While painting, she enjoys listening to a good audiobook. Her goal is to live off of her art, have her own collector-base and possibly work with galleries and museums.
