Resulting from the cross-combination of an ongoing pandemic and the re-reading of George Orwell’s 1984, a surreal vision that translates the sense of oppression and depersonalization to which we are all increasingly subjected – in a precarious balance between utopia and dystopia.
Nowadays the feeling of being a number is almost normal: at work, at the university, in the hospital; it’s the contemporary social system we are part of, as tiny but necessary cogs. In this painting I have tried to represent this state of things in a provocative way, taking an element usually associated with fun and transforming it into something threatening, which looms both over the indistinct figurines that parade below and over the viewer. I chose the waterslides because they are dedicated to leisure but they also have an ineluctability component: once you have taken your hands off the bar at the start, you are forced to follow the path to the end, there is no way to come back. New society is a work that plays on contradiction: the choice of bright and cheerful colors, like the candy pink of the background, is aimed at increasing the contrast between image and message.
